Operated by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, it is located 157 km north of La Serena, very close to La Silla Observatory and to 94 km from La Higuera, almost on the border with the Atacama Region.
It is 2,500 meters high, it has five optical telescopes and one solar telescope. Carnegie is currently building two giant 6.5m telescopes that are part of the Magallanes Project, both on Las Campanas hill.
INFORMATION OF VISITS AND CONTACT
Observatory Las Campanas receives public every Saturday of the year, if the weather conditions are adequate. The reservation has no cost, but it is recommended to do it one month in advance. The permit must be withdrawn in La Serena prior to the visit. The access is in private vehicles, there is no public transport. The guided tours are made in groups of 8 people maximum, only older than 6 years. Transfers from La Serena to the Observatory are approximately 3 hours.
